That spinning, dizziness, or unsteadiness?
a2PT Vestibular physical therapy in Sarasota resolves most vertigo without medication. One-on-one care for adults 55+—24-hour appointments.
Few things are more unsettling than a world that won’t hold still. Whether it’s brief spinning when you roll over in bed, a constant feeling of being “off,” or lightheadedness that makes you grip the railing, dizziness is frightening — and it quietly shrinks your life. Many of our patients tell us they’d stopped driving, stopped boating, stopped going out before they found us.
Here’s what most people aren’t told: the most common causes of dizziness in adults over 55 are highly treatable with vestibular physical therapy — often in just a few visits, without medication.
Your sense of balance comes from three systems working together: your inner ear (vestibular system), your vision, and sensors in your joints and muscles. When any of these misfire — or when the brain has trouble combining their signals — you feel dizzy, foggy, or unsteady. Common culprits include:
• BPPV — loose crystals in the inner ear causing brief, intense spinning with position changes. This is the single most common cause of vertigo and the most fixable.
• Vestibular hypofunction — A weakened inner ear balance organ.
• Ménière’s disease flare-related imbalance
• Cervicogenic dizziness — dizziness driven by neck stiffness
• Deconditioning and multi-sensory imbalance, common after illness or inactivity
This is a specialized branch of physical therapy — and one of our core strengths. Your one-on-one evaluation includes positional testing, gaze stability assessment, and balance testing to pinpoint the actual source of your symptoms. Treatment may include:
1. Canalith repositioning maneuvers (like the Epley) for BPPV — often effective in 1–3 visits
2. Gaze stabilization exercises to retrain the connection between your eyes and inner ear
3. Adaptation training to retrain the vestibular system, in particular the vestibular mismatch the person will present with.
4. Balance retraining so you feel steady on real-world surfaces — sand, docks, uneven pavers
Dizziness that lingers changes how you move: you stiffen your neck, shorten your steps, avoid turning your head. Those adaptations create their own problems — including fall risk. Early treatment is faster treatment. In Florida, you can see us directly without a physician referral.
Balance is a use-it-or-lose-it system. Many vestibular patients continue into PhysioFit, where we keep challenging your balance, strength, and confidence long after the spinning stops. So you stay steady on the boat, the beach, and the pickleball court.
